After the German team failed to qualify to the Sydney Olympics
-they finished 15th at the 1999 Tianjin World Championships
- the National Olympic Committee declined to fill the two
individual berths granted by the FIG. Despite a good showing
at the 2000 European Championships in Paris, Schweigert
and team mate Dagmar Fehrenschild had to stay home. After
spending her first year in boarding school, Birgit switched
to a normal day school and moved into a flat with her brother.
She has a commute of a hour to the gym, where she is coached
by Vladimir Aksenov, but found time for daily training all
through studying for her A-Levels. More importantly, she
even managed to watch every single World Cup match! Ankle
surgery has kept Schweigert out of competition since the
Cottbus Grand Prix in March, but she is confidentally looking
forward to making her comeback on the national and international
scene
