Next Stop: GHENT!

Teams from four nations are getting ready for their final international test before Ghent. The Dutch gymnasts, lead by their star in the making Verona van de Leur, will take on their guests from Canada, the Czech Republic and Germany this Saturday, October 13 in the Jan Massinkhal in Nijmegen..

The Canadian team is scheduled to arrive in the Netherlands on October 9and will prepare for Ghent at Nijmegen based club De Hazenkamp, home to team members Monique Nuijten, Renske Endel and Fieke Willems. Canada is the strongest team on paper, having placed 10th at the 1999 Tianjin World Championships and 9th in Sydney. However, Kate Richardson and Crystal Gilmore are the only 2000 Olympians on the world squad.

15th in Tianjin, the German team failed to qualify a full team to the Olympics and the National Olympic Committee refused to send Birgit Schweigert and Dagmar Fehrenschild to Sydney to fill the individual berths earned despite an unusual international protest. Schweigert has put her disappointment behind her to compete strongly this year and her team seems to be on the way up.

The Czech team is lead by its two Olympians Jana Komrskova and Katerina Maresova, both of them familiar faces on the Grand Prix circuit. Komrskova placed 29th in the all-around in Sydney whereas Maresova failed to advance. Komrskova was also 9th all-around at last year's
European Championships in Paris.

The hosts might have to do without Fieke Willems, who injured herself during the competition against Romania. Dutch national team coach Frank Louter is optimistic about his team's chances for the competition and says their current training is geared to eliminating mistakes: "These past weeks we stressed stable execution of routines in our training. We paid particular attention to floor, because that was a weak point in the meet against Romania. The level of the team is improving.
