Olympic Champion Aljaz Pegan just wanted a beer

One of the most interesting aspects of the Cottbus Tournament is the after-gymnastics banquet. With the Holiday Inn as a main sponsor best food quality is garantueed. As well as having fun - experienced banquet visitors can tell you stories over stories about partying athletes like Alexeij Nemov, Victoria Karpenko and Elena Produnova.

This year the tickets for officials and press were restricted, only the most important guys (like us - *grin*) get a chance to take part at the press table. Or you looked like being important and you were willing to pay 30 Euros for a seat at the "I like to be important"-table.

Anyway - the dishes would have been worth the money. Lots of different kinds of fishes (because meat isn't very popular in Europe at the moment because of BSE ), lobsters, caviar and champagne. Svetlana Khorkina choosed the potato-gratin and a glass of white wine, if anybody is interested in that .

Popular Chinese gymnast Chun Yue Bai - some not named gymnasts gave her the respectless nickname "it" because of her remarkable height of 133 cm - enjoyed the swiss ice-cream, Olympic Champion Aljaz Pegan just wanted to have beer and after the last desert has been eaten the real party began.

In one corner of the room there was a little mobile disco platform was, good sound, good music thought Elena Zamolodchikova by herself and was the first who started to dance. Nearly the whole "russian-speaking"-table followed, Ekaterina Lobaznyuk, Olga Roshupkina and all the others. But dancing seemed to be a job for girls and (more-or-less) officials that night, male gymnasts prefered having one (or another) beer at the bar or studying the results summary.

With a noticable exception: Shu Wai Ng (no, this is NOT a typo) was the star on the dance floor. The friendly 8.0 gymnast from Malaysia gave more than one of his sensational breakdance-shows for the wild applauding audiance.

...........

The rest of the party is short to tell, simply a great success of German hospitality. Sure, most athlets will like to return to the European Team Championships, hold in May in Riesa in Saxony which is not far away from Cottbus.
